How it happened

iThe house

Born in Cromer, Norfolk, in 1947. His father, Alec Dyson, was head of Classics at Gresham's School in nearby Holt, where both parents taught and where James was later a pupil. Alec died of cancer in 1956, when James was nine. The household had standing but no real money, and he has since described building into himself the sense that his future was down to him alone.

iiThe training

Gresham's, then a foundation year at the Byam Shaw School of Art, then the Royal College of Art from 1966, where he moved from furniture design into engineering. While still a student he joined Rotork Marine, run by Jeremy Fry, and helped design the Sea Truck landing craft — his first paid engineering work.

iiiThe first invention, and the lesson

In 1974 he and his wife Deirdre launched the Ballbarrow, a wheelbarrow that replaced the wheel with a plastic ball, through a company called Kirk-Dyson. He assigned the patent to the company rather than keeping it himself, and when the business needed outside money to grow he took on investors who diluted his stake and eventually voted against him. He lost control of both the company and the patent on his own invention. He has called it the biggest mistake of his career.

ivFifteen years in a shed

Frustrated that his own vacuum cleaner lost suction as its bag clogged, and having seen industrial cyclone separators at a sawmill, he set out around 1978 to build a bagless machine. Working through 5,127 prototypes over five years in a converted coach house, he supported the household on his wife's income as an art teacher while repeatedly remortgaging their home. He has said he ran up more than a million dollars in debt and didn't mind "living on the edge."

vRejected, then licensed abroad

Every major UK and US vacuum manufacturer and retailer turned the design down — a bagless machine threatened their income from replacement bags. A 1984 licensing approach from Amway collapsed into a fraud accusation and a repaid fee, followed years later by litigation after Amway brought out a similar machine of its own. In 1986 he licensed the design to a Japanese company, Apex, which sold it as the pink "G-Force" through mail-order catalogues. The royalty terms looked generous on paper but were worth little more than sixty thousand pounds a year once wholesalers took their cut — proof, he later said, that too many middlemen between him and the customer would always eat the margin.

Turning point

He used the Japanese royalty income to fund his own research centre and factory in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, and in 1993 launched the DC01 under his own name rather than licensing it to anyone else. It became the fastest-selling vacuum cleaner in UK history. For the first time the invention, the company, and the brand were all his, with no investor and no licensee standing between him and the sale.

viiWhere it landed

Dyson sued Hoover over a competing cyclone design in 1999 and won, collecting roughly six million pounds in damages and costs. The company remains wholly owned by Dyson and his family, has grown past six billion pounds in annual revenue, and employs some 14,000 people worldwide. He was knighted in 2007, campaigned publicly for Britain to leave the EU, and drew criticism for moving Dyson's global headquarters to Singapore in 2019. Recent estimates put his fortune above ten billion pounds.

Inventing a piece of hardware alone is more achievable today than it was in 1978 — CAD software, 3D printing, and crowdfunding all shorten and cheapen prototyping in a way a converted coach house never could. What hasn't gotten any easier is funding fifteen years of iteration yourself: remortgaging a home and running up six figures of personal debt while a partner's income covers the household is still the same bet it always was, and most people can't take it. The other required lesson is the one he learned the hard way on the Ballbarrow — assigning a patent to a company and then needing outside investors is how founders lose their own invention, and it's just as available a mistake now as it was in 1974.
