Summary

Raised middle-class in suburban Maryland, he met Steve Huffman at the University of Virginia and rode their spot in Y Combinator's first batch into Reddit, founded in 2005 and sold a year later for a modest sum.

The larger position came later, turning that reputation into two venture funds, Initialized Capital and Seven Seven Six, that backed Coinbase and Instacart while they were still small.

How it happened

iThe start

Born April 24, 1983, in Brooklyn. His father, Chris Ohanian, was a travel agent whose own parents had fled the Armenian genocide from Bitlis and Kharput and settled in Binghamton, New York. His mother, Anke Ohanian, was a pharmacy technician who had come to the US from Hamburg, Germany. Ohanian has said she gave up a career and overstayed a work visa "because of love," and completed only a GED once she was here rather than the credential her background in Germany might have supported. He was an only child. The family relocated to Columbia, Maryland, where he attended the public Howard High School.

iiUVA and Huffman

He enrolled at the University of Virginia, double-majoring in history and commerce with a minor in German, and roomed with Steve Huffman. Paul Graham gave a talk at UVA during their spring break and invited the two of them to apply to a new seed program he was starting; they were accepted into Y Combinator's first cohort, in Summer 2005, funded with the standard $12,000 seed check YC gave every team in that batch.

iiiReddit and the sale

Reddit launched June 23, 2005, as a simple link-aggregation front page. Aaron Swartz's company Infogami merged into the same parent entity shortly after, and Swartz became an equal owner before being let go in January 2007; Ohanian has since described that arrangement as an acquisition rather than a co-founding. In October 2006, roughly sixteen months after launch, Condé Nast (through Advance Publications) bought Reddit for a reported, undisclosed price in the $10 million to $20 million range. Ohanian and Huffman stayed on and moved to San Francisco, then left in 2009 to found the travel-search site Hipmunk.

ivHis mother's death

A few months after Reddit's founding, his mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer; she died in 2008. Ohanian has written and spoken about it publicly, including in a 2020 post marking the anniversary of Reddit's sale, saying her illness "weighed on me the most" during that period and that rewarding her confidence in him with an exit felt urgent for reasons that had nothing to do with money. In his 2021 UVA commencement address he described creating small daily doodles of Reddit's mascot as a way to make her smile while she was sick, and said her death taught him at twenty-three what people actually care about at the end.

vBuilding the venture funds
Turning point

In 2011 he co-founded Initialized Capital with Garry Tan and Harj Taggar, an early-stage venture fund trading on his and Tan's own operating experience rather than a prior career in finance. The first fund raised $7 million; by its sixth fund in 2021 the firm had raised more than $3.2 billion cumulatively and had wired an early $200,000 check to Coinbase's Brian Armstrong in 2013, along with seed money into Instacart, Flexport, Patreon, and Rippling. This, not the comparatively small Reddit sale, is where most of Ohanian's current position was actually built: a fee-and-carry structure deployed against other people's capital, repeated across two funds, rather than a single company's founder equity.

viStepping back, June 2020

Ohanian ended his managing-partner role at Initialized Capital and, on June 5, 2020, resigned from Reddit's board in the days after George Floyd's murder, asking publicly to be replaced by a Black board member. He has said he wanted the resignation itself to function as an act of leadership rather than a departure. Reddit later named Michael Seibel to the seat.

viiSeven Seven Six

He founded the venture firm Seven Seven Six (776) and closed a $150 million first fund in June 2021, named for 776 BC, the year of the first ancient Olympics, after a story he tells about an unheralded cook from a nearby village who won the first race. Half of the fund's limited partners are women and 15% are Black or Indigenous, and it sets aside 2% of committed capital for a "Growth and Caregiving Commitment" covering founders' childcare and related costs.

viiiFamily and other ventures

He married the tennis player Serena Williams in November 2017; they have two daughters. He has also co-founded the youth-sports-adjacent media company Athlos, and holds founding ownership stakes in the women's soccer club Angel City FC and the Los Angeles Golf Club, layering personal recognition into ownership positions across several industries beyond software.

ixWhere it landed

Reddit itself went public on the NYSE (ticker RDDT) in March 2024, years after Ohanian's operating role had ended and his stake had been diluted through many further funding rounds; no source reviewed documents a controlling or even large position for him at that point. Aggregator estimates instead put his personal net worth at roughly $150 million as of 2024 and again as of mid-2026, built mainly from Initialized Capital and Seven Seven Six rather than from Reddit stock.

Can you replicate their success?

Partly

The starting move is still available: a stable, ordinary household that can absorb four years of college without strain, plus admission to a selective university, is a common enough combination. What is much harder to repeat is the specific door that followed it. Y Combinator's first batch accepted a tiny handful of teams in 2005; the program now receives many thousands of applications a cycle and funds a much smaller share of them, so the same low-effort path in is closed even though the program itself still exists. The larger and more durable part of Ohanian's position, the two venture funds, required something else again: enough personal reputation and a track record credible enough that outside limited partners would commit hundreds of millions of dollars to him and his partners to manage. That kind of fundraising access is not available to a first-time founder regardless of talent; it is the reward for having already been through a recognized exit, however modest.

Required conditions
1 A stable middle-class household able to absorb four years of college without financial strain
2 Admission into a highly selective, now heavily oversubscribed early-stage accelerator
3 A co-founder supplying the technical build the founder lacks
4 An acquirer willing to buy an unproven product quickly, before a durable moat could be built or contested
5 A subsequent track record and public reputation credible enough to raise outside limited-partner capital for a venture fund of one's own

The cost-of-failure score comes from this person's own money and circumstances. But who they were in America carried its own weight, the same way their household or income did, and it shaped how hard the path was just as much. That part isn't in the cost-of-failure number. It's here instead.
