How it happened
His father, James, supervised electrical equipment at a Tennessee Valley Authority dam near Jefferson City, Tennessee, and brought his son along on the job; the two once built a tractor together. It was a steady, working-class income in a two-parent household, not a rich one. He graduated a straight-A student from Jefferson City High School, then finished top of his class in electrical engineering at the University of Tennessee in 1979.
He joined IBM straight out of college at twenty-two. Three years later, in 1982, he was chief engineer on the team that designed the original IBM PC, and he holds three of its nine original patents. Working with Dennis Moeller, he co-invented the Industry Standard Architecture bus, the design that let a printer, a modem, or a disk drive plug into any PC without being built by IBM itself — the choice that let a clone industry exist at all.
IBM paid for the credentials that moved him from engineer to executive track: a master's from Florida Atlantic University in 1982, then a fully salaried leave to Stanford for a PhD in 1992, on a self-timed processor architecture he designed himself. None of it cost him tuition or years of unpaid study.
In 1999 he led the IBM Austin team that built the first commercial gigahertz microprocessor, a speed that had been treated as a wall for years. He holds more than 20 patents in total.
In 1995 he became the first Black IBM Fellow, the company's highest technical distinction, a title no one who looked like him had held in the honor's first three decades. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1997, elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2001, and later served as CTO of IBM Middle East and Africa before retiring in 2013 to teach as the John Fisher Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee. The entire climb ran on an IBM salary; he never held an ownership stake in any of the platforms he helped build.
