The routes

Path archetypes

Seven routes, grouped by how the money, access, and ownership were actually gotten — not by industry or personality.

Reachable at hard landing

Archetypes 1, 2, 3, and 4 share one property: none require permission. A credential, a service anyone can buy, an audience you assemble, a product that distributes itself. Archetypes 5 through 7 are what business media covers almost exclusively, and the least walkable.

1. Owner-Operator

hard-landing reachable

Services/content business, revenue from day one, financed by operating cash flow, never diluted.

3. Audience Converter

hard-landing reachable

Build a direct audience, then convert recognition into ownership rather than fees.

4. Forced Bootstrapper

hard-landing reachable

Locked out of raising money, so they had to turn a profit, and ended up keeping an unusually large stake as it scaled.

5. Platform Launcher

soft-landing prerequisite

An elite former employer supplies the money, the credibility, the network, and often the idea. Outside investors grow it from there.

Where this path goes wrong

The clearest cautionary case is the Audience Converter who doesn't keep the rights. Same audience, same level of fame, a fraction of the ownership, and years spent fighting over it. The fame was never the valuable part. The ownership was.

A research instrument, not inspiration. Every claim carries a source.
